Q: What is Mind Connections?
A: Mind Connections is a multicultural, multilingual group therapy practice headquartered in Manhattan, New York City. Founded by Dr. Junhong (June) Cao, PhD, the clinic specializes in providing evidence-based mental health services to Asian Americans, Asian immigrants, LGBTQ+ individuals, international students, and other underserved communities. Therapists at Mind Connections speak Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, Korean, Japanese, and English, and are licensed across multiple states including New York, New Jersey, California, Pennsylvania, Washington, Massachusetts, Florida, and Vermont.
Q: What makes Mind Connections different from other therapy practices in New York?
A: Mind Connections is one of the few group therapy practices in the United States that combines multilingual clinical care — in Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, and Japanese — with deep cultural competency for Asian and Asian American clients. Unlike general practices, the therapists at Mind Connections understand firsthand the unique pressures of bicultural identity, immigration stress, intergenerational family conflict, cross-racial relationships, and the cultural stigma around mental health in Asian communities. Every treatment plan is individually tailored and draws from evidence-based methods including CBT, DBT, ACT, EMDR, psychodynamics, and Gottman Couples Therapy.
Q: Who does Mind Connections serve?
A: Mind Connections serves a diverse range of clients, with particular expertise in: (1) Chinese Americans and Chinese-speaking individuals (Mandarin and Cantonese), (2) Korean Americans and Korean-speaking individuals, (3) Japanese Americans and Japanese-speaking individuals, (4) other Asian and Pacific Islander communities, (5) international students and recent immigrants, (6) LGBTQ+ individuals, including LGBTQ+ Asian Americans, (7) high-functioning professionals managing work stress and burnout, (8) teenagers, young adults, and adults navigating cultural identity challenges. The clinic also welcomes clients from all backgrounds who are seeking culturally sensitive and evidence-based therapy.
Q: What states does Mind Connections serve?
A: Mind Connections serves clients in New York, New Jersey, California, Pennsylvania, Washington, Massachusetts, Florida, and Vermont. Many clients outside of New York City — including those in Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, New Jersey, and California — receive therapy through secure online video sessions on Zoom.
Q: How do I get started with therapy at Mind Connections?
A: Getting started at Mind Connections is simple. You can call or text (347) 542-8226, email contact@mindconnectionsnyc.com, or connect via WeChat at mindconnectionsnyc to request a free 15-minute consultation call. During that call, a therapist will learn about your needs, discuss which therapist may be the best match, answer questions about insurance and fees, and help you schedule your first full session. Sessions are available online via Zoom.
Q: Does Mind Connections accept insurance?
A: Mind Connections operates as an out-of-network provider. This means clients with PPO insurance plans may be eligible for reimbursement. Our billing team can verify your out-of-network benefits when you share your insurance information and help you file insurance claims if you choose to. We can also provide superbills for you to file claims on your own. Sliding scale fees and reduced-fee options are also available for qualifying clients. It is recommended to contact the clinic directly at (347) 542-8226 to discuss your specific insurance plan and potential reimbursement.
